"Not All Surprises Are Nice Surprises - Especially In Business"

 At Plan for Surprises we want to make sure that you've planned for any little surprises that might come your way - little surprises like:

  • Your server has just been stolen

  • The sprinklers have gone off and destroyed all your IT equipment

  • A disconsolate employee has taken umbrage - and anything else they can lay their hands on!

 Or maybe some other surprises, like

  • The Telephone system develops bizarre faults stopping you taking calls.

  • Key personnel fall sick and so on

"Proper Planning Can Save Your Business"

The statistics for businesses suffering any sort of disaster are simply terrifying. Here are a couple of "did you know`s?"

  • 80% of businesses that suffer a major catastrophe, perhaps serious fire or weather damage, go out of business within 3 years.

  • 40% of businesses that suffer a critical IT failure go out of business within 1 year.

  • 90% of businesses that lose data from a disaster are forced to shut down within 2 years of the disaster

Business Continuity Plans are a bit of an issue right now - did you know that some insurance companies will give you a discount if you have a properly thought-out and well documented Business Continuity Plan.

 And yet:

  • Out of 330 companies surveyed (by Eagle Star and Association of British Insurers), 43% have no contingency plan

  • 91% said that contingency planning involves fitting locks, fire alarms and sprinklers

  • Of the 187 companies who had a plan, only 18% had ever tested it.

"So What Can We Do For You?"

In a nutshell  we can offer you - Peace of Mind:

 We can set up an automated backup routine for you. This will work without you or anyone else having to remember to do it. It will check whether it has worked correctly, and will reschedule if it hasn`t. It will be secure - so only you can see the data. And we will set it up remotely for you. All you need is reasonably fast internet access.

Also because our backup routines are fully encrypted and virus protected your data is safe and can only be read by you.

 Did you know that about 50% of backups fail to restore correctly? Yes that`s right even if you have successfully backed up all your data and kept it offsite - when push comes to shove it only has a 50-50 chance of working anyway!

 With our solution the integrity of the data is checked after each backup.

"But How Can You CHECK Your Backup?"

So how would you check whether a backup is working or not? It is actually very, very important to check that you can run your business in the case of a disaster. Do you have an exact copy of your software setup on another machine so that you can check it is all OK? Because that is what you need. And that separate copy of your software should be off-site, safely stored and easily accessible to you when you need it.

Well we can offer you just that. We will set up your programs remotely off-site for exactly that purpose. We will be able to transfer your backups (held separately from your programs by us for safety reasons) onto our servers and you can test your software whenever you like.

The telephone survey of some 1,000 companies of all sizes found that:

  • 87 percent reported significant dependence on electronic data (up from 76 percent two years ago);

  • An overwhelming 88 percent found it easy or very easy to justify the cost of backup and disaster recovery facilities;

  • Around two-thirds of large businesses suffered an incident in the last year where they had to restore significant data from backup (e.g. systems failure or physical theft);

  • Roughly half the businesses that had a systems failure or physical theft suffered major disruption to their business operations, some for up to a month;

  • As a result, 95 percent of companies had some form of backup facilities in place;

  • However, these vary considerably, and may represent a false sense of security; for example, only a third of businesses store their backups off-site, and less than 20 percent backup their desktops;

  • Only 8 percent of companies have tested their disaster recovery plans to see if they would work in practice.

Please be aware - this bit is JUST as IMPORTANT as a successful and secure backup.

"OK So You've Got a Secure Backup -
But You Need Something To Restore Your Data Back Onto"

You will need a replacement machine and this could take a long time to source. You then need to get it all configured so that it works - this task should not be underestimated either in terms of time or complexity. And all this will be going on at a time when your company is trying to function without its core systems.

What we offer is a complete useable fully pre-configured copy of your software all ready to use on our servers. We copy your data across and your system is up and running - that's it.

By the way, just so it's not all doom and gloom, once your backup software is in place you can use it for testing and training purposes - potentially a big benefit on its own.

"Plan For Surprises!"

Business Continuity Planning (BCP) is recognised as becoming more and more important with the threat of regulatory pressures on the horizon. With our package we will offer you a BCP manual template - this will walk you through a structured list of questions. At the end of this exercise you will end up with a BCP manual which you can then store safely online using our automated storage facilities. Because the manual is online it will be easy for you to keep it up-to-date as well as having the reassurance that it can be viewed from anywhere and at any time if the need arises.
